SUMMARY

Protag Studios is a small streetwear start-up that aims to create manga/anime-related t-shirts. The team started with three members who share the same passion for Japanese manga books. Their long-term goal is to create their own manga story and sell their merchandise based on their story. I was hired to create their artworks and concepts for their original story and lore.

T-shirt Design

Sketched and illustrated iconic scenes/collages from manga books such as One Piece, Dragon Ball Z, and My Hero Academia. Also, created mockups to sell the concepts and be displayed on their online store. These illustrations were hand-drawn then vectorized in photoshop for the final printing.

One Piece: I Want To Live!
My Hero Academia: Deku's Lightning Punch

The Egg Concept

Illustrated and conceptualized the egg for one of the main character in the story. The egg was to be
dragon-like, with indication of lightning power. It also has different stages as it begin to hatch.

As the story unfolds, there are different variants of the egg out in the world. These eggs had been harnessed by different factions as a way to gain resources and power against opposing factions.

Different brainstorms of the egg during the early stage of the concept. (There was also an idea of the egg being mechanical, or something man-made. But the team chose the direction of it being more organic to fit the storyline better)

Prelude Shirt Design

To introduce their audience to the story, the team wanted to create a prelude of the story. Then create a shirt design that shows snippets of the prelude.

The prelude shirt is the second t-shirt drop the team launch. Setting down another stepping stone of progress in building the story and creating merchandise.

Prelude Story Manga Page

Along with every shirt purchase, a manga page would also be included. This helps flesh out the story of what is happening during the event and embrace their brand's identity of being manga lovers.

The art direction was to draw everything in manga style, which is black and white with hatching and stippling techniques to keep the panels clean and easy to comprehend.
